Final Research Paper Overview:
I have never been one to like writing research papers; however, this paper was one I enjoyed writing. From the interesting facts and information I found to my passion of the subject, the paper seemed to write itself. Here is a brief overview of what I wrote in my paper:
Thesis: Children with autism and other intellectual disabilities require additional aid in order to augment their skills and independence. However, both society and the neurodiverse community would benefit from more awareness and education regarding the daily obstacles individuals with autism face.
Background Information:
A general introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder: how many children it affects, the wide spectrum, some characteristics, other conditions that can be associated with ASD, a brief explanation of the Triads of Impairment, and an introduction as to why awareness is important.
Argument topics:
Behavioral Therapies: how different behavioral therapies can be beneficial to each child on the spectrum (ABA, Occupational Therapy, etc), discuss how these therapies are both time intensive and expensive and how awareness could help make these therapies more accessible.
Sensory Integration Therapy: explain hyper vs. hypo sensitivity and how it can affect the behavior of an autistic person, strategies to make adapting to new environments easier and less stressful
Inclusion in the classroom: the importance of allowing those with intellectual disabilities participate in classrooms, introduction to adaptations, accommodations and modifications in the classroom, the importance of a whole school approach regarding social skills, how bullying can be reduced with more awareness and understanding, and in general the importance of inclusion for both neurodiverse students and neurotypical students.
